  • David Larwill has played a pivotal role in Australian culture throughout the 1980's and 90's. His imagery has broad appeal with markets expanding offshore. Larwill in recent times has begun to develop a print career of note, complementing his painting.
  • Larwill is showing in London towards the end of 2005.
  • $100 USD invested in 2000 in a work of David Larwill had an average value of $228 USD in  June 2005.
  • Larwill's top price at auction is $51,700- Deutscher-Menzies 2002 (The estimate was $28-35K).
  • A relatively young artist to have a track record with a top price and excellent consistency in backup in secondary sales speaks volumes.
  • “Larwill has been undervalued at auction for many years. The recent high prices to some extent corrects this and brings him into line with other leading contemporary artists such as Maguire and Moffat”   - Mark Fraser, Sotheby’s.
  • "Larwill over the next 5 – 10 years will rise dramatically…There is a good book on him; he is collected by older collectors who already have sound collections of the Moderns (Blackman, Boyd, Tucker etc) as well as the younger collectors who are only starting to put collections together now. He seems to me to be a very good sound artist to invest in or just to enjoy”  - David Cook, Christies.
  • "Artists with room to move in the market:...David Larwill.”   - Michael Reid, The Daily Telegraph, July 2004.

  • The total secondary auction sales for this artist in 2000 were less than $1000 – by 2004, sales of his work had exceeded $188,000 (source: Australian Art Sales Digest). There has also been a thriving secondary trade in his paintings in galleries with investors being returned 4 and 5 times the amount they paid for his paintings.
  • Australian Art Collector has short-listed Jason Benjamin in its ‘Top 50 Most Collectable Australian Artists’ alongside the critically acclaimed names of Blackman, Olsen, Whiteley, Boyd and Nolan.

    • Mark Schaller was born in Hamburg in 1962.
    • Schaller studied fine arts at the Victorian College of the Arts in his late teens after part-studying film and other visual art courses. And today, he still studies life-drawing.
    • He became a founding member of the renowned Roar studios in the early 1980's, and sold his first painting at 18 during an early Roar Studio show in Prahran.  The group established its enduring reputation at its Fitzroy gallery and since then Schaller has made his way in the world via his own hand, through painting, sculpture and print-making.
    • Career highlights have included successful solo exhibitions in Australia and overseas as well as acquisition of his paintings and prints by major Institutions such as the National Gallery of Australia.
    •  Schaller has an abundant curiosity, and is highly inventive in his selection of materials and work practices. Besides his paintings, his latest focus has been large sculptural forms in wood and limited edition print work.

    •  Polystyrene has been one of the unusual inspirations behind Schaller's current print works - created through a process of dripping "turps" on to the material, which naturally eats deeply into the base.  Schaller came up with this unusual process after spending several months studying traditional print-making methods at Fitzroy's Port Jackson Gallery. (PJP)

    • The results produced are unique combinations of his famous expressive, colourful style and the high quality prints of Port Jackson Press.
    • From an art market perspective, Schaller is regarded as a very strong mid career artist, who has continued to build a significant career for the past decade, continuing to challenge himself to make art that is passionate and relevant to contemporary culture.

Portfolio Construction

This Premium Portfolio brings together three of the most exciting prospects in the Australian art market. All works included can be regarded as highly rentable in the corporate market and have significant capital appreciation potential.

The striking imagery of the two key figures of Roar Studios, David Larwill and Mark Schaller, who came to the attention of the collecting public as the founding members of this influential artist-run exhibition space established in Melbourne in 1982 are featured in this collection.

The importance of the two, as established within the secondary market, is assured in a variety of media.  Both have spent considerable time working within the studios of Port Jackson Press, creating unique etchings, critically regarded as their best limited edition print works to date.

Also included amongst this group is Jason Benjamin, one of the most highly sought artists in Australia.  His evocative landscapes have a broad appeal across the art market and with the collecting public.

From a market and critical perspective all artists are well established in both the primary and secondary art markets.  The rental appetite for these works is also strong.

This is a portfolio which will long be regarded as an important benchmark in Australia’s cultural heritage, robust in terms of capital appreciation and sustained rental return.
