Julian Meagher
Born 1978. Lives and works in Sydney.
His unique oil paintings are mainly concerned with the tattooed body surface. He also investigates cultural scenes of men carrying ‘shrines’ into the ocean.
Four years ago Meagher left a career in medicine to paint full
time and has already become a highly collectable name. He has
studied at Cecil Studios in Florence, Italy, and the Julian Ashton
Art School, 1994-1997 and portraiture remains a large part of his
practice.
His unique oil paintings are mainly concerned with the tattooed
body surface. He also investigates cultural scenes of men carrying
'shrines' into the ocean.
Meagher has had an extremely successful year in 2009 with sell out
shows in Hong Kong, Sydney, and Melbourne. He was the recipient of
the New Work Grant from the Australia Council of the Arts as well
as being selected into Artbank.
2009 also saw him hung as a finalist in the Doug Moran Portrait
Prize, Salon des Refuses, Metro 5 Art Prize, Blake Prize for
Religious Art and the RBS Emerging Artist Prize.
In 2010 he has already had a successful solo show in Brisbane
and was a finalist in the Salon des Refuses. He is currently
in Bangkok for a residency throughout June 2010, and then will show
at the Melbourne Art Fair as well as producing work for a solo show
in September 2010.
