Josh Bowes
Lives and works in Daylesford, Victoria
Bowes ironically and often humorously combines the contrasting themes of urbanization and nature to question the plight of human existence and the banality of the everyday.
A self taught artist, Josh Bowes began his artistic career on the streets of Melbourne, developing an intricate drawing style that incorporates the explosive use of colour and layering often found in graffiti art. Bowes went on to train as a painting understudy for Melbourne based artist James Robertson, attesting to his skilfully rendered images.
Bowes ironically and often humorously combines the contrasting themes of urbanization and nature to question the plight of human existence and the banality of the everyday. Using pencil, spray paint, enamel and oils, his anthropomorphic figures are often consumed by the monotony of city life, where they must adapt and change in order to survive.
More recently, Bowes has expanded his practice to include larger scaled paintings that continue his exploration of nature with a strikingly urban aesthetic.
