Deborah Young
Lives and works in Sydney.
An emerging artist, Young has already achieved curatorial and critical acclaim.
After graduating from the National Art School in 1989, Young
continued to study Old Master' techniques at the Charlie Sheard
Studio School. Drawing on centuries of painting technique to
develop her unique visual language, her aesthetic has matured
through study of meticulous glazing and application of pure
hue. Young's romantic sensibilities reflect the 18th century
landscape artists, and sit harmoniously alongside her contemporary
abstractionist style.
Paying homage to the great abstractionists of the 20th century,
particularly Piet Mondrian and Jean Arp, Young also
references the Op Artists of the 1970s. The ultimate success of her
works is a sense that they subtly pervade the space in which they
hang. Through clever layering, juxtaposition and morphing of
geometric shapes, these paintings draw the viewer inwards. A
deep understanding of the language and nature of colour further
enhances their three dimensional qualities, and add to the delicacy
and richness of her work.
An emerging artist, Young has already achieved curatorial and
critical acclaim. In 2007 Thylazine: The Australian Journal
of Art, Ethics and Literature, selected Young as their feature
artist. Her works have been purchased by Art Bank, the
Australian Federal Government, and a growing number of private
collectors. More recently, Young was commissioned by
architects Indyk and Associates to create an extensive
four-panelled work as part of their refurbishment of the Sackville
Hotel in Rozelle, Sydney. Her triptych "Ley Lines" is also a
feature of Moog Hotel, Darlinghurst.
