David Stephenson
Born 1955 in Washington D.C.
A fascination for the sublime has led him to travel and photograph extensively around the world, with journeys to both the Artic and Antarctica.
David Stephenson studied at the Universities of Colorado and New
Mexico, completing an MFA in 1982. That year he moved to Australia,
and he now heads the photography program at the University of
Tasmania's School of Art in Hobart. A fascination for the sublime
has led him to travel and photograph extensively around the world,
with journeys to both the Artic and Antarctica. The Domes project
was begun in 1993 during an Australia Council residency in Italy,
and he returned several times to build a collection of hundreds of
images of cupolas from buildings all over Europe.
Stephenson's photographs have been exhibited widely in Australia
and overseas, including individual exhibitions at the Art Gallery
of New South Wales (1993), the National Gallery of Victoria (1998)
and the Cleveland Museum of Art, USA (2001). His work is
represented in many private and public collections, including the
National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria,
the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Art Gallery of South
Australia, Queensland Art Gallery, the Tasmanian Museum and Art
Gallery, the Bibliotecque Nationale in Paris, the San Francisco
Museum of Modern Art and New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.
